Glass Poor Reviews Made M. Night Shyamalan Cry

Its never easy to learn that something youve made isnt liked by others. Director and writer M. Night Shyamalan has experienced this several times in his career, most recently with Glass, the final chapter of his Eastrail 177 trilogy that began with Unbreakable and continued with Split. In fact, Shyamalan cried upon learning that Glass was taking a critical beating back in January. As he recalled:

I was in London when I heard the U.S. reviews for Glass were poor. I was in a makeup chair for a TV show, and I cried Wed just come back from the London screenings, which were through the roof. We had only great screenings of the movie around the world. So essentially I wasnt prepared. I had this false sense of being a part of the group in a safe way. But boy, did I feel distraught that day.

For nearly two decades Unbreakable was a standalone feature in M. Night Shyamalans filmography, but the filmmaker finally revisited that world with Split, which, in typical Shaymalan twist fashion, had Bruce Willis David Dunn appear at the end. Like Unbreakable, Split was met with positive reception, so shortly after its release, Shyamalan announced hed be making Glass next. The hype surrounding Glass only grew over the next two years (give or take), especially after the first trailer dropped last summer.

Unfortunately for M. Night Shyamalan, Glass didnt receive anywhere near the same level of approval as its predecessors, ranking at 37% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes. In other words, it wasnt a flop across the board (as The Last Airbender and After Earth basically were), but it wasnt a critical triumph either.

Hearing that Glass wasnt being well-received was enough to make M. Night Shyamalan shed some tears while he was promoting the movie across the pond, but he felt better once he accounted for how commercially successful it was. Elaborating on how he felt at the time during a recent lecture at NYUs Stern School of Business (via Indiewire), Shyamalan said:

Honestly, I was feeling like, Will they never let me be different without throwing me on the garbage pile? The feeling of worthlessness rushed me, and to be honest, it doesnt ever really leave. But anyway, the film went on, right? It became number one in every country in the world, and it represents my beliefs.

Glass ended up making nearly $247 million worldwide off a $20 million budget, so on the money side of things, it definitely performed splendidly, although it still ended up falling short of Unbreakable and Splits hauls. In any case, M. Night Shyamalan appears to have made peace with how things turned out on Glass, though he still acknowledged that he still gets tired dealing with this kind of critical reaction to his work.

M. Night Shyamalan is now working on his upcoming Apple series Servant and also has a movie called Labor of Love in development. The Indestructible Mushu Will Make A Comeback In Disney's Live Action Mulan

Disney's live-action remakes have been incredibly successful for the studio and after some early missteps, one of Disney's most popular Princesses, Mulan, is now getting her turn to shine. While there's a lot that we don't know about how the new film will follow in the footsteps or diverge from the original, it seems that one, somewhat unlikely character, will return, as Mushu, Mulan's tiny dragon sidekick will reportedly be part of the new film.

In the original Disney animated movie, Mushu is a spirit guardian of Mulan's family who attempts to aid the young heroine as a way to get back in the good graces of his fellow spirits. Since Mushu is, in fact, a tiny dragon, there was some question about whether or not such a character would appear in the new Mulan. Some of Disney's previous remakes have attempted to be a bit more true-to-life and thus some of the animal sidekicks, like the mice in Cinderella, were just actual mice, rather than anthropomorphized characters. Of course, it's always possible that Mushu could just be an actual lizard, and not a talking dragon. While The DisInsider claims Mushu will appear, the report doesn't explain how, so it's possible the character could appear in a non-traditional way. He could be a character that accompanies Mulan through the entire story or just one who appears as a sort of easter egg reference to the original.

In addition to Mushu apparently appearing, it's also being reported that music from the original animated film will appear in the remake as well. It stops short of calling the new film a musical, in the vein of Beauty and the Beast, so the more likely scenario is that a couple of key songs might appear, similarly to what was done with the remake of The Jungle Book.

While Disney purists will probably be very happy with the news that Mushu will be part of the film, one wonders if the remake is planning to veer too close to the original movie. While Beauty and the Beast, the Disney remake that most closely resembled its predecessor, certainly made a ton of money at the box office, it suffered from a lack of creativity which some of the other remakes had. Mulan is a character rightly commended for being one of the Disney Princesses most in charge of her own destiny. The character can still be improved on, however, but only if the story of the movie lets her do so.

Mulan is filming now with an eye toward a release date in March of 2020. Before we get there, however, we'll see Disney remakes for Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King. all scheduled for 2019.

A Big MCU Reunion Happened On The Set Of Star Wars The Mandalorian

Star Wars might be a galaxy far, far, away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the new Star Wars series The Mandalorian was the home for a big MCU reunion. Jon Favreau, who is producing the series, launched the MCU with the original Iron Man, and he was recently visited by a host of other MCU directors, including Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Thor: Ragnarok's Taiki Waittiti and Ant-Man and the Wasp's Peyton Reed. Check it out.

If you include the upcoming Avengers 4, the assembled directors in this image are responsible for a total of nine of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's a pretty impressive track record here even though one of them was Iron Man 2.

It seems that a few friends decided to go by the set of The Mandalorian, the upcoming series that will debut on the Disney+ streaming service that will launch next year, in order to support their fellow director. It's possible Taika Waititi was there in his capacity as a director, as we know that he will be helming one of the episodes of the new series, but the other guys don't have any official position within the show, as far we know, anyway. Maybe they're all being given cameos as Star Wars aliens, that sort of thing has certainly happened before.

The responses to the image are fairly predictable and they fall into a pair of camps. the first half of the responses are using the moment to advocate for James Gunn, the director who has been fired from his position within the MCU. Those that felt the decision was unfair are wishing he was part of the picture as well.

The rest of the responses on the Russo Brothers Twitter feed are ignoring the picture entirely and just demanding the first trailer for Avengers 4. Many rumors have indicated we could see the trailer as early as today. The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War dropped this time last year, and since the film is being released at the same time next year, it's very possible that could happen.

While Jon Favreau has certainly found plenty to keep him busy outside the MCU, from The Lion King to The Mandalorian, the future is less clear for the other directors. Without knowing the outcome of Avengers 4 it's impossible to know which character will be getting future sequels (other than Spider-Man, of course). It's also possible these directors are just ready to move on to other things.

Of course, with several Marvel series also planned for Disney+, it's possible these directors could do both. They could take a job creating a series as Favreau has done, which would certainly be a change of pace, but stay within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Whatever these guys do, it will almost certainly be great. And when they do it, they'll probably get visited by the rest of the MCU directing fraternity for more great pictures.
