No, Gwyneth Paltrow Isn't Going To Quit Acting

We’ve got the goop, er scoop, on Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress known most recently for her work in the beautysphere has been pulling double duty between that gig and acting jobs in recent years. There was apparently some expectation that after Avengers: Endgame Paltrow might be calling it quits. However, now the actress has spoken out about some previous Internet chatter saying Goop had taken over her work time. Per Paltrow:

I’ve never said that I am quitting acting. What I say is Goop is my full-time passion, and being the founder and CEO of Goop is what I do all day every day, and occasionally when something is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I'm able to participate. I think I'm just not focused on full-time acting right now.

While Gwyneth Paltrow told Today’s Savannah Guthrie that Goop kind of is her life these days, she doesn’t want to officially retire from acting or anything. In fact, she filmed a web series The Politician for 2019 and, although Endgame was filmed some time ago, she also has that coming up. It’s definitely true that Paltrow spoke out about retiring from the MCU after Endgame, at the time saying she was “a bit old to be in a suit.” She later recanted and said she would come back for Robert Downey Jr. if she were needed.

Still, it’s definitely true that Gwyneth Paltrow has slowed down in the acting business in recent years.

However, leaving the MCU and slowing down aren’t the same as passing on every single project that comes her way. Gwyneth Paltrow’s focus may be on Goop, which is expanding into Netflix content and more, but she also said she’s still very much in the acting game when the right project comes along.

During her time on Today, Paltrow also reflected on what Goop has become, revealing it was always her dream to get into business and eventually build a lifestyle brand that she could be proud of, but getting there was the challenge.

I think I had a secret dream that it would become what it’s become, but when it started 10 years ago, I had absolutely no idea. I just had a vision but I had no idea how to get there.

Goop was launched by Gwyneth Paltrow in 2008, at a time when she was still taking a lot of acting gigs -- that year, in fact, Iron Man, Two Lovers and a short called Pashmy Dream were released. As Goop has picked up, her career has slowed but not halted. In 2017, Paltrow's only filming happened for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Last year, Avengers: Infinity War was her only onscreen gig. Neither of those roles were large movie roles, but the actress has appeared in at least one project every year going back to 2010. Meanwhile, her major lifestyle brand is now worth $250 million and consumes a large chunk of the actress' time.

This is a very different deal than a lot of other actors who have gotten out of the game at various points. Robert Redford recently retired and almost immediately regretted the comment. Michelle Pfeiffer also talked about how raising kids sort of led to her not acting for a period of years before she was able to push back into the game. Then, there's Cameron Diaz, who dealt with some press recently over whether or not she is retired, since she hasn't acted after appearing in Annie back in 2014.

So, what the future holds for Gwyneth Paltrow in the acting world is unclear as her tenure at Marvel (seemingly) wraps up. What is very clear, however, is that she'll have plenty of work to do at Goop in the meantime.

No, Disney's Controversial Song Of The South Won't Be Available On Disney+

Do you remember when we heard that Disney was opening up its vault and would put its entire motion picture library on its upcoming Disney+ streaming service? Yeah, about that... It turns out that there will be one notable, obvious and predictable omission from the digital home of all things Disney: the controversial film Song of the South won’t be available on Disney+.

Despite Disney letting its other titles out of the vault for good, the 1946 film Song of the South will remain locked away. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has no plans to make the title available alongside the rest of the company’s offerings on Disney+.

Song of the South won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” and actor James Baskett won an honorary Oscar for his portrayal of Uncle Remus. Despite that initial acclaim, Song of the South is very controversial viewed from a modern lens, in particular for its portrayal of African-Americans.

For those reasons, it has never been released on home video in the U.S.; not on DVD, not on VHS, nothing. In 2011, Bob Iger indicated that bringing the movie back wouldn’t be in the best interests of the company’s shareholders. Therefore, Song of the South not making the jump to Disney+ should come as no surprise as Disney is just carrying over its previous policy regarding the film to the company’s new platform.

So unless you want to source an old copy of the film from overseas, the closest you’ll get to seeing Song of the South anytime soon is riding Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World, which takes its inspiration from the film’s animated sequences.

Song of the South won’t be the only omission from Disney’s catalog on Disney+. The 1941 Disney film Dumbo, which recently got a live-action remake, will be on Disney+, but it will not include the controversial crow scene. The scene features a crow named Jim Crow, which is a reference to the name of the blackface character that was later appropriated as a term for laws that enforced segregation after Reconstruction. Tim Burton’s Dumbo obviously didn’t include this scene.

Even if you want to see Song of the South get some type of modern release, either on Blu-ray or be made available for streaming or digital purchase/rental, you can understand why Disney doesn’t want it on Disney+. Disney’s streaming service is being positioned as a family-friendly offering in keeping with the brand’s reputation, and having Song of the South and Dumbo’s Jim Crow scene don’t exactly comport with that.

No, Michael Keaton Isn’t Returning For Spider-Man: Far From Home

With Spider-Man: Far From Home being the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie post Avengers: Endgame, a lot of secrets were being kept about the film to keep the big crossover event properly secret. Now that things are getting a bit relaxed on the spoiler front, we're getting some more detail about what is actually in the upcoming movie, as well as what's not in it, including an appearance by the Vulture.

For many, one of the highlights of Spider-Man: Homecoming was Michael Keaton's role as Adrian Toomes. He's generally viewed as one of the better MCU villains to date, and that film ended with Toomes knowing the secret of Spider-Man's identity. It seemed like the sort of thing that might factor into a sequel, and so the word that Michael Keaton would be back for the movie that came to be known as Spider-Man: Far From Home wasn't a huge surprise.

Except, it turns out, that's not the case. Director Jon Watts says that we won't see Michael Keaton in the new movie, nor will we see Laura Harrier, who played Liz, Peter's love interest, and Toomes daughter, in the first film. According to Watts...

Keaton is not in the movie. And Laura is not in the movie.

Jon Watts doesn't go into further detail with Fandango, so it's not clear why it was being reported that Michael Keaton would be returning a year ago and now that turns out not to be true. It's possible there were initial plans to have Adrian Toomes appear, but the script went through changes. It's also possible that somebody got a hold of a fake script, something MCU movies have been known to use in the past to prevent spoilers from leaking.

Back when it was reported that Keaton would be in the movie we knew very little about the project as a whole, and so the possibility that he would be returning was certainly there. Now that we know what the movie is about, with Peter Parker on a European vacation with classmates when some massive elemental monsters appear, it's hard to imagine how Keaton's character, in prison in New York as far as we know, would fit into the story.

There appears to be plenty going on already. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Mysterio, a character who is typically a Spider-Man villain, but appears to be a hero in the trailers. Of course, Mysterio is usually a fraud in the comics, so it remains to be seen if this is all on the level.

In addition to that, we have the information that a hole has been torn in between dimensions as part of the use of the Infinity Stones, allowing at least one person from an alternate reality to cross over.

While we may not see Michael Keaton return in Spider-Man: Far From Home the possibility of him returning in the future is always there. If the multiverse really is going to play a role in the future of the MCU, we could see multiple versions of Michael Keaton for all we know.
