Black Panther is the biggest movie of the year at the box office, but if somehow you haven't seen it, or you just really want to see it again, you'll have that chance very soon. Netflix has revealed the new movies and series coming to the streaming platform next month, and among the new batch of binge-able goodies is Black Panther which will bow in just a couple of weeks on September 4.
This is likely exciting news for fans, and based on the box office there are a lot of those. While those who needed to see Black Panther again may have picked up the Blu-ray or purchased a Digital version, those that did not will be able to watch the massive Marvel hit as many times as they want in just a few days. Another of Disney's releases from earlier this year, A Wrinkle in Time will hit at the end of the month, on September 25.
Of course, as some of the biggest new releases on Netflix next month are Disney titles, one has to wonder what's going to happen as these titles go away for good. Disney is set to launch its own streaming service next year and we know that the current deal with Disney is set to run out with none of Disney's movies releasing theatrically in 2019 or beyond set to go to Netflix. Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp are both expected to show up on Netflix down the line, but they'll be the last Marvel films to do so.
Netflix has said that it's not worried about the deal with Disney ending, mostly because the majority of Netflix growth in recent months has been internationally, and the Netflix deal with Disney only exists in a few countries. Still, Netflix subscribers in the U.S. and Canda are a big part of the total subscriber base and it will be interesting to see how many jump ship from Netflix to the Disney service once it's available.
Of course, the reverse is also true and because Disney has existing deals with services like Netflix, the studio won't be able to just dump the entire MCU or Star Wars franchise on its service at launch, potentially making it less attractive, at least at first. Disney CEO Bob Iger has said that's part of the reason the service is investing in original content, like a new Star Wars series and original films like live-action versions of Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone.
Still, the fact that Black Panther is coming to Netflix is awesome, as it's absolutely the sort of film that deserves a rewatch, perhaps several. Just don't stop to think about what happens next in Avengers: Infinity War. It may make things a bit too depressing.
