Exclusive Venom Clip Shows How The Comics Inspired The Character's Movie Look

There are a lot of things about the movie version of Venom which diverge from his comic book origins. However, the filmmakers were under no illusions that the look of the character on screen had to be right. In an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip that will be part of the upcoming Blu-ray release of Venom, the filmmakers talk about how the different ways Venom has been portrayed over the years influenced the look for the new movie. Check it out.

Venom is one of the most popular comic book villains/anti-heroes ever. With the character being first created as a dark opposite of Spider-Man, the character borrowed some of the wall-crawler's attributes, but in a menacing and inhuman way. As such, he's become a very visually interesting character and in this behind-the-scenes clip we see several on the production, including director Ruben Fleischer, discussing how the movie wanted to be sure to pay homage to the iconic design from the comics.

Creating the look of a character for a movie that has already been drawn in comics for years might seem to be quite easy, but the film's producer points out that Venom hasn't really had a single look over the years. As different artists have taken on the character Venom has been given a number of different looks. This, combined with the fact that the alien symbiote itself has some ability to manipulate its own look, means that there isn't necessarily one way to make Venom look.

On the one hand, this added some potential pitfalls in trying to figure out how to design the creature, but at the same time, it gave the film some freedom to work, to create the version of Venom that worked for the movie while still being sure to make one that was true to the origins of the character.

In the end, the key was making sure the most iconic parts of the character came through. This meant getting the black symbiote face and the white eyes to play off each other in that unique way they do while making sure the violent mouth full of teeth was also there. That part certainly came through.

The movie version of Venom did have to do without what is possibly the most recognizable element of the character, the giant white spider logo that is usually found on Venom's chest. That aspect existed because of the character's origins in Spider-Man comics, however, since the film version was born an entirely different way, it wouldn't have made sense to include that.

Still, it's clear that the comics were always important to Venom 's production, so that fans would see the Venom on the big screen just the way they always wanted. Based on the film's incredible box office take, it appears the effort was successful. The odds that this won't be Venom's only time on screen are extremely high.

Venom will be released on Digital December 11 and 4K, Blu-ray and DVD December 18.

The Battle For SPECTRE - The Rights War That Complicated James Bond For Decades

Time and time again, weve seen issues surrounding intellectual property rights complicate everything from a films production to its theatrical release. But some cases are so complicated that they dont simply go away after the cameras are packed and the posters are removed. And in the case of most other areas of his expertise, nobody does complicated rights better than James Bond.

What started as an idea for a film became a flashpoint of massive legal proportions that, until recently, left the 007 franchise without the usage of one of its most iconic bodies of villainy for quite some time. With the resolution of this conflict still pretty fresh in recent history, and Bond 25 currently in production, the battle for SPECTREs very place in the series canon is a vital piece of history to revisit.

What Is SPECTRE?In the history of the film adaptations to Ian Flemings James Bond novels, the most formidable threat to the world was the SPecial Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion. Known as SPECTRE for short, it was the one stop shop for villainous personalities like Dr. Joseph No, Auric Goldfinger, and most notably Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the leader and Number One in charge of SPECTREs operations.

SPECTRE and its personnel were used in the films intermittently, starting with 1962s series starter Dr. No, with 1971s Diamonds Are Forever marking the supposed end of the organization and the one true death of Ernst Stavro Blofeld. It wasnt until 2015s Spectre that the James Bond series would reintroduce both that character (through the casting of Christoph Waltz), as the rights issues surrounding the creation and implementation the man and his legacy were subject to legal challenges that werent easily circumvented.

The Movie That (Almost) Started It AllWhen author Ian Fleming looked towards turning his literary franchise into a box office hit, Thunderball was originally considered to be the first film to do so. The eighth novel in his series, his 1961 book was a creation that drew on a rather controversial source: an original screenplay that was written between himself and screenwriters Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham in the late 1950s. While Fleming eventually decided to distance himself from the writing process, McClory and Whittingham would finish the screenplay, which eventually got its title from Ian Fleming himself.

After reading the finished novel before publication, McClory felt that Ian Fleming had plagiarized the screenplay of Thunderball for his novel. Even with some differences separating the two projects, one such difference being the alleged creation of SPECTRE to stand as the villains, Kevin McClory tried to stop the book from being published. While that tactic failed, McClory eventually pursued further legal action that granted him the literary and film rights to Thunderball, leaving Ian Fleming with the rights to the novel he wrote from its screenplay.

The End Of SPECTREWith Kevin McClory owning the rights to Thunderball, this kind of threw the question of who created SPECTRE into the air, with McClory and Ian Fleming being the two parties the issue landed in-between. In the end, while the matter wasnt officially resolved, Ernst Stavro Blofeld would make his final appearance in Diamonds Are Forever, with SPECTRE not even being named in the film at all. While there were intentions to use Blofeld and his criminal enterprise in 1977s The Spy Who Loved Me, McClory was ready with another injunction to prevent this from happening.

Instead of fighting another court battle to continue, the film was altered to omit the organization and its leader, opting instead for an original character, shipping magnate Karl Stromberg, as its villain. Though turnabout was fair play at that same point in Bond history, as Kevin McClory and Sean Connery had worked on a story entitled Warhead, which would be the first of several attempts to revive Thunderball in his own image. With the rights firmly in his hands, it was only a matter of time before he tried again.

The Remakes That Stoked The FiresSure enough, Kevin McClory would go on to two more attempts at remaking Thunderball in his own way image. The first was 1983s Never Say Never Again, in which James Bond and Ernst Stavro Blofeld fought for custody of two nuclear warheads yet again. And oddly enough, Sean Connery was convinced to play the character of 007 yet again, after famously saying hed never return after Diamonds Are Forever. With this film being released in the same year as the official Bond series Octopussy, there was obviously a competition between the two films. Ian Flemings estate attempted to prevent such a race, but lost their bid to stop the films release. In the end, the two films only saw a $27.5 million difference in their grosses, with Roger Moores official James Bond movie winning out.

The second, and final, time that Kevin McClory would try to remake his intellectual property was with the film known as Warhead 2000 A.D. With Sony spurring him on in hopes it could create further competition with its own James Bond franchise. But, much as McClory prevented MGM from using SPECTRE and Blofeld for The Spy Who Loved Me, the studio was able to successfully prevent Kevin McClory from achieving his goal, through a deal with Sony. If the film had progressed, there would have been a chance that either Timothy Dalton or Liam Neeson would have played the role of Bond. But alas, it was never meant to be.

Reuniting Bond and SPECTREIt seemed that the true James Bond series would never see SPECTRE again in its lifetime. Even Albert Broccoli and EON Productions, the parties that practically ran the show with MGM, thought it to be so. Nowhere was that clearer than in the bold statement they made in the prologue to For Your Eyes Only. With a huge action sequence that saw Bond tormented by and dispatching of a bald man sitting in a wheelchair with a white cat in a smokestack, the message was clear: that contractually complex character is dead, and they didnt need him anymore.

While the series would eventually move on for decades without official use of SPECTRE or its main villain, circumstances eventually saw those rights landing with MGM and EON Productions once more. After Kevin McClory passed away in 2006, his family would move on to the point where they sold the rights to the intellectual property he held onto through the rest of his life back to the studio. So it came to pass that in 2013, SPECTRE became a part of the official 007 playground once again, just in time to tie the organization in with its modern counterpart, Quantum, in the 2015 film named for this shadowy group of newly restored evil.

At this point, the only way that Ernst Stavro Blofeld wont return would be due to Christoph Waltz not wanting to portray the character again. Though if the history of Blofeld has taught us anything, its that he can always be rewritten for a new actor through cosmetic surgery. Its worked for him in the past, though if the casting of Rami Malek goes through, it seems unlikely that this route is going to be taken. But at the very least, SPECTRE will be around for any future villain to take their place in, ready to use its apparatus to make James Bonds life a living hell.

How Vox Luxs Big Ending Reveal Affected Natalie Portmans Performance

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Vox Lux**. If you have not yet seen the film, please bookmark this page and return after your screening!**Brady Corbet's Vox Lux has a legit bombshell ending, dropping a reveal that forces you to rethink everything you just watched. Specifically, we learn that Celeste's success and career as a singer was a result of not amazing talent and/or fortuitous timing, but instead a literal deal with the devil she made during her near-death experience. Knowing this forces you to reexamine everything that you think you know about Celeste, but what makes it even more interesting is that it was a key detail that Natalie Portman kept in the back of her mind throughout her entire performance:

I definitely did. I think it's sort of like what Raffey was just talking about, about it being a blessing and a curse when you know that the thing that kind of birthed you was kind of not innocent, like luck [laughs] There's a Faust kind of, you know, story... You want to see her devilish sides for sure.

The ending of Vox Lux was one that kept my brain spinning for a while after I walked out of the film, and my curiosity continued until the next day when I had the pleasure of sitting down with Natalie Portman and co-star Raffey Cassidy to talk about their work on the movie. After a discussion about their very different approaches they each took towards playing the same character, I brought up the end reveal and inquired about its impact on their performances.

It turns out that it was something Portman was very much thinking about, and it resulted in her accessing some parts of the character she may not have otherwise.

The big reveal arrives just minutes before the end of Vox Lux, with Willem Dafoe's voice over narration starting up in the midst of Celeste's Vox Lux concert. It's said that when Celeste was shot in the neck at the start of the movie that she not only died, but made a deal with the devil in exchange for her life, allowing her to not only live, but also become one of the biggest celebrities in the world. Furthermore, it's strongly implied that Jude Law's character -- the unnamed Manager -- is either the devil making Celeste's dreams come true, or at least an agent of evil.

Not only does this have an effect on the way you view the life trajectory of Celeste, but also multiple other details throughout the movie. For starters, it explains Celeste's half-confession - "I think I've done something terrible" -- while in the hospital in the first act, but it also further explains why she was so entirely horrified to find her sister (Stacy Martin) and manager sleeping together (on beyond the normal reasons).

The Final Avengers: Endgame Trailer Was Watched An Insane Amount Of Times

Well, this is it, folks. The long-running saga that has been the MCU for over a decade now is about to wrap up all the major threads (so far) when Avengers: Endgame finally hits theaters on April 26. So, when Disney actually saw fit, last week, to release a new (and final) trailer for the upcoming epic, you can probably imagine that it drove fans wild. It drove them so wild, in fact, that fans were obliged to watch that trailer many, many times. How many times, you ask? Why, only 268 million times in 24 hours. That's all.

When things got rolling with Iron Man in 2008, we had no idea where we'd be several years later, and we certainly had no idea how highly anticipated the film that was once (and for a long time) only known as Avengers 4 would come to be. That all changed, however, when Avengers: Infinity War was released and we realized that many of the heroes we'd spent so many years watching were either going to go into Endgame as big fat losers or as...big piles of dust. The desire to see and hear anything possible from the actual footage of Endgame has been building for almost a full year, but we've been treated to a lot of misdirects, out right lies and tons of secrecy when it comes to how the story of The Decimation will be resolved. Thus, the crazy response to the final Endgame trailer.

Now, it's not unusual for trailers (usually the first trailer) from big budget blockbuster extravaganzas to hit views of many several million, mostly because they tend to be based on properties that have built in audiences (like comic books) who are eager to see some of our biggest stars take on something they've loved for many years. But, even knowing that...268 million views in only 24 hours is kinda insane. That's actually 56 million more views than the number of people in the entire United States as of the 2017 census. I mean, wow.

Someone has certainly overachieved when it comes to watching the last Avengers: Endgame trailer, right? Actually, I have no doubt that hundreds of someones watched this trailer many times in an effort to parse out all the relevant information that could be found in the, mostly new, footage contained within. The trailer was released last Thursday, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people suddenly got "too sick" to go to work that day and just spent all their newly allowed free time lazing around in bed and revisiting the awesomeness that was Avengers: Endgame.

Of course, now the question is whether or not we'll get more new footage before the film releases at the end of next month. Most fans at least seem to agree that no more full length trailers are required at this point, especially if Marvel wants to continue to keep as many secrets of the film away from us as possible.
