Following Avengers 4, Chris Evans Has Joined Rian Johnson's Next Movie

As we saw earlier today, it's looking more likely that Chris Evans is bidding farewell to Captain America. Having been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for eight years, the actor has wrapped shooting Avengers 4, and there's no indication that he'll suit back up in Phase 4. But life goes on, and he's certainly not leaving the acting world. Evans balanced his time in the MCU with other projects here and there, and now word's come in one of his first post-Avengers 4 appearances will see him collaborating with Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson on his upcoming crime drama.

According to Deadline, Chris Evans has been cast in Knives Out, which will see him acting alongside Daniel Craig. Having delivered the incredibly divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi late last year, Johnson is tackling Knives Out before he moves onto his Star Wars film trilogy. Although Knives Out is expected to start filming before Craig tackles the recently delayed Bond 25, it's unclear if this movie will be Evans' first to be released after Avengers 4 or if one of the other movies he's already signed onto will arrive sooner. Along with his cinematic endeavors, Evans is also attached to star in the Apple limited series Defending Jacob.

Chris Evans' movies during his tenure as Captain America included What's Your Number?, Snowpiercer and Gifted, and now that he's seemingly retired from his patriotic superhero duties, that gives him more time to show off his acting chops in other kinds of movies. Considering all the positive chatter surrounding Knives Out, which recently Media Rights Capital bought the world rights for at the Toronto International Film Festival, Evans being one of the leads is a solid next step forward, especially since Daniel Craig will be his costar. I can't wait to learn who will be joining these two in the main cast, but regardless, this will be a good way for Evans to delve into darker material.

The only plot details that have been revealed so far about Knives Out is that it will be a classic whodunnit murder mystery (in the vein of Agatha Christies's stories) set in the present. In addition to directing, Johnson wrote the script and is producing with his partner Ram Bergman through their still-to-be-named company. Before jumping into the Star Wars franchise, Johnson directed grittier fare like Brick and Looper, so making Knives Out will be a return to familiar territory before he sets out to chart a new path for the galaxy far, far away.

Can you imagine anyone besides Jim Carrey playing Ace Ventura? Certain roles are only associated with specific actors, and the over-the-top pet detective absolutely goes hand-in-hand with the rubber-faced comedian. But Hollywood loves a good casting-couch story, where roles are offered to actors who pass, and it allows us to imagine how different the world might have been if one other person said yes. For example, Carreys In Living Color co-star David Alan Grier says he was offered the role, explaining:

I turned that movie down. They said You and Rob Schneider, well put you guys together. And I was like No, thank you.

David Alan Grier was reliving his past successes and career near-misses during an interview on the Howard Stern show. And Grier talked about attending the world premiere of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, which opened in 1994. The way Grier tells it, he was going to show support for Jim Carrey, his friend. The two were active on In Living Color, and Grier made sure to laugh as hard as he possibly could, so that his friend would feel supportive.

But David Alan Grier was convinced that the movie would be a total flop. A disaster! As he recalled to Howard Stern:

I just went, He is insane! No one is going to buy this! So I see Chris Rock in the lobby. And I go, 'Chris, who do you think He goes, David, no one will see this movie. Okay? Forget it. Now again, right over my head. I was wrong. I was wrong.

And it was then that David Alan Grier admits that the project was put to him as a potential starring vehicle, and he passed on it. This was part of a much larger conversation where Grier was telling Stern that he also auditioned for the role of George Costanza on Seinfeld, but didnt take it seriously because he didnt understand it, and didnt think it would be funny. He denies the rumor that he was offered the role of George, but he says he did audition. That, too, is a role that, in our minds, belongs to Jason Alexander.

It might not be the exact trailer you've been begging for, but a very awesome preview for Captain Marvel just dropped. The two minutes of footage is stuffed with lots of great images to digest (that mohawk!), including our first real look at Annette Bening's mysterious character. We don't know her name, but at least now we have some clues to begin piecing together about this mysterious Kree figure.

Captain Marvel has a very large and impressive cast, and for the most part, Jude Law has taken the spotlight when it comes to unnamed characters. However, Annette Bening is in the film as well, and while we had an idea that Law would be a Kree soldier close to Carol Danvers, we had no information on Bening's role. That all changed tonight with the release of the second Captain Marvel trailer, which teased a few more story details. As far as it concerns Bening, the trailer confirms that her character is a Kree. This debunks rumors that she would be playing Carol Danvers' human mother, though, she might technically still be a mother figure.

Judging by the trailer, Bening is playing a high-ranking figure in the Kree, the alien race that Captain Marvel lives and fights alongside. As the character explains, the Kree found Carol after an accident on Earth gave her her powers and wiped her memory. The Kree took her in and made her own of their own -- literally. The trailer implies that she has Kree blood, and Bening's character seems pretty proud of the procedure.

Now, the trailer doesn't offer any real hints at the identity of Bening's Kree, but I have a theory or two. As I said, she seems to be a high-ranking figure if Carol is going to directly to her for answers about her origin. She might be the direct overseer of Starforce, the elite warrior heroes of the Kree of which our hero is a part.

However, I have a shot-in-the-dark theory (and I'm talking pitch black), what if Annette Bening is playing the leader of the Kree? As comic book fans may know, the Kree's leader is not a woman who looks like Annette Bening; it's a giant green head called the Supreme Intelligence. It's an artificial intelligence made up of the smartest minds in Kree history, and it rules with cold logic. You can take a look at the trailer and judge for yourself, below.

Could it be that Annette Bening's character might be the MCU's take on that? Perhaps she's a proxy which acts for the Supreme Intelligence or maybe she's a program that looks like a Kree rather than a giant head. I said it was a shot-in-the-dark!
