What The Terminator Genisys Sequel Would Have Been About, According To Jason Clarke

The Terminator franchise has gone through some immense changes over the course of its five installments. Most recently, 2015's Terminator Genisys ended with the promise of more adventures in the newly-rebooted universe, but now it looks like we won't see any further stories in that particular continuity. Having said that, it turns out that there was a plan in place for Genisys 2, and it would've fleshed out cyborg John Connor in far greater detail. Terminator Genisys star Jason Clarke recently opened up about the story and explained:

What I remember was that second one was going to be about John's journey after he was taken by Skynet...like going down to what he became; half machine, half man. That's where the second one was going to start, and that's about all I knew.

So if you walked away from Terminator Genisys scratching your head about the fate of Jason Clarke's John Connor, then it sounds like the later installments in the proposed trilogy would've fleshed out that narrative in more detail. Specifically, it looks like the second film would've explained how John became a Terminator-human hybrid. Terminator Genisys ended with Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese and the older-looking T-800 ("Pops") driving off into the sunset to take part in another mission to prevent the rise of Skynet, but the second film would've shifted focus to give us more backstory on the villain's arc.

Expanding that narrative would've been incredibly significant for the future of the series because Terminator Genisys made some incredibly bizarre choices with John Connor. Unlike films like Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Terminator: Salvation, the movie explicitly took the focus off of him and even changed his alignment to make him the villain of the story. It was a bold take on the character, and Jason Clarke seems particularly remorseful for the fact that they never got a chance to see that narrative thread all the way through to the end.

Of course, despite Jason Clarke's recent remarks to Collider about the ill-fated Terminator trilogy, the franchise is preparing to move in a new direction. James Cameron recently decided to return to Terminator in a creative capacity, and a sixth installment is set to hit theaters next year under the direction of Deadpool director Tim Miller. It won't be a continuation of the Genisys storyline, but the war between man and machine will continue to rage on the silver screen.

The word was that the next Die Hard movie was going to be a very different sort of movie, and that seems to have been reinforced by the recent hiring of the screenwriters. The new movie is supposed to be an "origin story" sort of movie, that includes both the return of Bruce Willis and the casting of a new actor to play a younger John McClane. That by itself makes the new film a very different animal, but now the studio has hired Chad and Carey Hayes, the twin brother writing team behind The Conjuring movies, to pen the script.

It's an interesting decision considering that horror has been the stock in trade for the pair for the better part of the last decade. In addition to The Conjuring movies, the Hayes brothers wrote the House of Wax remake as well as films like The Reaping and The Crucifixion. The pair was previously attached to write a pair of non-horror movies with the two planned sequel's to Dwayne Johnson's Journey movie, but based on recent comments by Johnson himself, those projects are either dead, or, at the very least, looking for a new star.

One certainly wonders if the decision to bring in writers known for horror is part of the plan for the new Die Hard movie. While we would never expect a Die Hard prequel to be a straight horror movie, perhaps the plan is to set the story apart by making it a darker tale. The entire concept of a Die Hard prequel is a bit strange, to begin with, since the entire premise of the original film is that John McClane is in over his head and has never experienced anything like that before. If the prequel were a straight action movie with a similar theme, it would seem to conflict with the other installments, so maybe this movie is looking to set itself apart in more ways than one.

According to The Tracking Board, the pair is rewriting the script, which implies that there was one already, but that it wasn't quite what they were looking for. Bruce Willis made recent comments that he was going to be checking out the script, so perhaps he took issue with it. While the movie is being described as a prequel, it seems the plan is for the story to shift between two time periods, allowing Bruce Willis to appear as well as having a new actor play a younger John McClane. It's unclear if Chad and Carey Hayes are starting from scratch or making changes to the existing version of the story.

Either way, it seems clear that a new Die Hard movie is on the horizon, even if we're not quite sure what it's going to look like.

Some of Disneys recent live action adaptations have been relatively straightforward remakes of their animated predecessors, while others have been taken more drastic creative liberties. The upcoming Cruella movie will fall into the latter category, presumably because we already got a 101 Dalmatians remake in 1996. Weve know for years that Emma Stone will play a younger version of Cruella de Vil, but it looks like another Emma could join this prequel project, this one having the last name Thompson.

Fresh off Emma Thompsons Saturday Night Live hosting stint and ahead of the release of her next movie, Late Night, Variety is reporting that the actress is in early talks to star in Cruella. However, details regarding who she would play are being kept under wraps.

Assuming a deal is reached, this would be the latest entry in Emma Thompsons extensive Disney resume. Back in 2002, she voiced Captain Amelia in Treasure Planet, and in more recent years, shes played P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks and Mrs. Potts in the live action Beauty and the Beast remake. As far as what else she has coming up, along with Late Night, Thompson can be seen later this year in Men in Black: International and Last Christmas, and beyond 2019, shes attached to The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and How to Build a Girl.

All we know about Cruella so far is that it will be an origin story depicting how Cruella de Vil developed her obsession with dog fur, specifically the dalmatian variety, although it still hasnt been specified where in her timeline this movie will take place. Cruella was voiced in the original One Hundred and One Dalmatians animated movie by Betty Lou Gerson, and Emma Stone would be the third actress to portray the character in a live action on-screen project, following behind Glenn Close, Victoria Smurfit and Wendy Raquel Robinson.

For now, Im guessing that Emma Thompson is being eyed to play Cruella de Vils mentor in this prequel. Unless Cruella was just born with the impulse to want to turn dogs into clothing, she had to have absorbed such malevolence from someone, and thats where Thompsons character would fit into the picture. Alternatively, maybe Thompson could be playing a fashion mogul that the younger Cruella clashes with during this story.

Originally Mozart in the Jungle co-creator Alex Timbers was set to direct Cruella, but due to scheduling conflicts he later dropped out and now I, Tonyas Craig Gillespie is helming the picture. Tony McNamara penned the most recent draft of the script.
