Mark Waid made his first big splash in the comic book realm when he started writing The Flash in the early 1990s, and in the years since he's tackled many other popular characters across DC, Marvel and other companies. This includes Superman, as Waid's experience with the Man of Steel includes penning the origin tale Superman: Birthright. Waid has yet to cross over into superhero movies and write one of these massive blockbusters, but if the day ever comes that someone approaches him for a Superman movie, he already has an idea of what the story would be about. As Waid answered when asked if he'd be interested in crafting a big screen Superman story:
I'd take a swing at something like that. I don't know what my story would be. Actually, that's not true. I know exactly what my story would be. But I can't give it away. It's the one Superman story I've got in my back pocket that- if we all live long enough- maybe someone will ask me to tell it someday.
You can't blame Mark Waid for wanting to keep quiet about his Superman story while speaking with Revenge of the Fans. As far as we know, he's not in consideration to write a Superman movie, but he's better off playing it safe rather than revealing some or all of his idea and risk someone else stealing it. Whether the folks at DC and Warner Bros approach Waid for a Superman movie remains to be seen, but even if that opportunity never comes, at least he could conceivably still tell this story in a comic book. Granted, he hasn't written at DC in over a decade, but having also left a huge part on their publication history with his runs on JLA, Legion of Super-Heroes and Kingdom Come (to name a few), maybe he'll return to the DC universe someday.
Henry Cavill's Superman launched the DC Extended Universe in 2013 with Man of Steel, and he returned for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, dying in the former movie to stop Doomsday and returning to life in the latter movie to aid in the battle against Steppenwolf and his Parademon army. Now that Kal-El/Clark Kent is resurrected, there's been talk about if/when Man of Steel 2 will happen, but officially, there haven't been any major updates. Cavill is certainly game for reprising the Kryptonian hero, and he even suggested that Brainiac would be a worthy adversary for Man of Steel 2. Depending on if Cavill is familiar with Mark Waid's work and is intrigued by the writer's idea, maybe he could put in a good word.

Dark Phoenix got a start to its run with $5 million from its Thursday night preview showings according to The Wrap.
