It is easy to lose yourself in the sheer number of music biopics that already exist or are currently in development. Having said that, every now and then we find one that really piques our interest. That is the case for the upcoming Elton John biopic, Rocketman, and it looks like the long-awaited film has become even more intriguing with the official casting of Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton as the music icon.
Per a report from Deadline, Taron Egerton has officially signed on to play Elton John in Rocketman. The actor has been incredibly vocal about his desire to take on the part in recent months and after much speculation it looks like he has finally signed on the dotted line. This development comes after a recent change which saw Egerton step in for The Revenant actor Tom Hardy, who was initially set to portray the beloved singer.
Directed by Eddie the Eagle's Dexter Fletcher, Rocketman will aim to take a look at Elton John's life beyond the glitz and glamor. The film will follow him through his early years as an aspiring musician, and track his ascent to stardom, chronicling the trials and tribulations that occurred along the way and detailing the long-standing musical partnership he's had with songwriter Bernie Taupin. Weirdly enough, this is far from the only silver screen connection shared by Taron Egerton and Elton John, as the two both previously appeared in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which debuted in theaters last year. The movie is being produced by Vaughn, John and David Furnish, and the script has been written by Lee Hall. Production on the biopic is expected to being this summer.
Of course, those of you who have kept up with Taron Egerton's career over the last few years likely already know that he could easily step into a role like this. In fact, the Kingsman star generated quite a bit of enthusiasm in 2016 when he provided the vocals for Johnny in Illumination's Sing and actually got a chance to sing his own version of an Elton John classic. Taron Egerton clearly has the chops to deliver an Elton John track in animation form. Now, it is a matter of waiting to see if he can do the same while actually playing the singer in live-action.
