While many Hellboy fans are excited to get a new movie based on the popular character, they're also disappointed they won't see an end to Guillermo del Toro's planned trilogy. It's somewhat understandable that fans would wonder how del Toro feels about the franchise moving on without him, but David Harbour, who will be taking on the title role in the new Hellboy movie, thinks it's time that people respect the director's wishes and just stop asking him about Hellboy. I think that the one thing that's a little weird is everybody now asks him about it and I think he's annoyed at that. So he's said some things about it on Twitter where he's just like, 'Just don't ask me anymore,' and I think it's [just] don't ask him anymore. He likes me, he was very kind to me, and he was like, 'Good luck, kid.'
At this point, the Hellboy franchise has moved on and Guillermo del Toro isn't part of it anymore. While that is obviously frustrating for those of us that loved the two movies del Toro made, it has happened and there's nothing anybody can do about it. Del Toro made it clear before the reboot was announced how much he wanted to make a Hellboy III. Everybody involved did what they could to make the movie happen. We can pretty much guess that the director isn't thrilled that the reboot is happening as it basically kills any chance that was possibly left for a third film, but asking del Toro just how frustrated he is doesn't accomplish anything.
Instead, David Harbour tells Marc Meron on the WTF Podcast that Guillermo del Toro has wished him luck in the new franchise. Besides, del Toro is doing just fine, what with him winning an Oscar for Best Director and seeing his latest film, The Shape of Water become Best Picture. In the grand scheme of things, he's doing fine. Though one certainly wonders if the people who made the decision to reboot Hellboy might have wondered if they made the right call when The Shape of Water became a critically acclaimed hit.
The new Hellboy is set to be an R-rated affair designed to follow more closely the original comic which has a stronger emphasis on horror than the Guillermo del Toro version which was a more traditional comic book superhero action story, though with del Toro's signature creativity when it came to creature design.
Comparisons between the new Hellboy and the old are inevitable, but we have to wait and actually see the new one before we can truly make those judgments. We'll get that chance when the new Hellboy arrives in January.

Perlman defined the role of Big Red with his longtime collaborator Guillermo del Toro in 2004's Hellboy, and the director and star reteamed for the film's sequel Hellboy: The Golden Army in 2008.
