The Dark Knight Is Celebrating Its 10th Anniversary With Special, Limited IMAX Screenings

The Dark Knight Is Celebrating Its 10th Anniversary With Special, Limited IMAX Screenings

In the two decades since superhero movies really took off, few movies have been as impactful to the genre as 2008's The Dark Knight. Arriving three years after director Christopher Nolan successfully rebooted the Batman film franchise with Batman Begins, The Dark Knight is not only frequently considered one of the best superhero movies of all time, but also a triumph for filmmaking in general. Now that The Dark Knight is 10 years old, Warner Bros is commemorating this special anniversary by bringing the movie back to theaters for a limited run in IMAX next month, but it will only be in four select locations.

Starting on August 24 and lasting for one week, Warner Bros will hold special IMAX screenings of The Dark Knight in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Toronto. Those of you living in any of those cities will want to hop on this opportunity quickly, as tickets for opening day will go on sale this Friday, July 20. Initially only the showtimes for the August 24 screenings will be revealed, but the participating theaters will announce the showtimes for subsequent dates closer to release. Here the theaters for those interested in watching The Dark Knight on the biggest screens possible.

IMAX is now a common choice for watching blockbuster movies in theaters, but a decade ago, Christopher Nolan broke new ground by filming select sequences on IMAX 70 mm film cameras, including the opening bank robbery sequence that introduced Heath Ledger's Joker. So the fact that The Dark Knight is returning to air exclusively on IMAX screens is especially appropriate, though it would have been nice if there were more locations participating. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of The Dark Knight and live in any of these locations, then this sounds like an event that's definitely worth checking out. That said, there's a strong chance that tickets will sell out quickly. As for Nolan, his experience with IMAX on The Dark Knight led to him returning to the format for later movies, including Interstellar and Dunkirk.

Whether you're watching it on the big screen or small screen, there's no denying how successful The Dark Knight was back in the day. Making over $1 billion worldwide, the sequel was met with critical acclaim and went on to earn numerous accolades, including Heath Ledger posthumously winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and sound designer Richard King winning the Best Sound Editing Oscar. Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Dark Knight trilogy four years later with The Dark Knight Rises.
