Remember back when we first learned Avengers: Infinity War was going to be broken into two parts? Well, that changed in a big way, at least in relation to Part 2's title, and now fans are waiting anxiously to find out what the subtitle for Avengers 4 will be now that it finally has one. Although some people at Marvel may know the big secret, it now sounds like we will not actually learn Avengers 4's true name until well after Avengers: Infinity War debuts. In a recent interview, director Joe Russo explained:
No, no. It's going to be quite a long while before people see that title. We need people to see this movie, digest this movie, and then we can tell them what the next story is they're going to see.
It's hardly surprising to learn that Avengers 4's title will not formally receive an announcement right away. The cast of Avengers: Infinity War reportedly doesn't even know it, and Kevin Feige has also suggested that the title of Avengers 4 spoils elements of Infinity War, so it would make plenty of sense for Marvel to want to hold onto the name until some audiences have had a chance to see the film. Though some Marvel films (such as Black Panther) end with the tease of the next film's title, this makes it seem like Marvel Studios will sit on the Avengers 4 title a little longer, and then add it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe when the studio is ready for that spoiler to be out in the world.
A big part of this stems from the fact that Avengers 4 has evolved to become its own entity since the original announcement of Phase Three a few years ago. Early on, it was suggested that Avengers: Infinity War would be split into two features that would play out over the course of a year, but now the movies are no longer being looked at as two halves of the same story. That being said, Avengers 4 will maintain close ties with Infinity War, and Josh Brolin is listed as reprising Thanos in Avengers 4. So even though next year's Avengers flick could potentially introduce a new villain or see a new challenge come to light, we should expect Thanos to remain an important player in the final chapter of the MCU's Phase Three.
Of course, despite Joe Russo's recent remarks to Yahoo Movies about the Avengers 4 title, that hasn't stopped some people from looking at context clues in an attempt to try and figure out what Avengers 4 might actually be called. Theories have popped up all over the web in recent weeks as the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War has drawn near, but we won't know anything for sure until after Infinity War finally hits the big screen at the end of the month. All we know for sure is the recent remark from the Russos suggesting that the title of the film should scare us, thus hinting as some massive changes in the MCU status quo.
So we'll have to keep playing the waiting game when it comes to Avengers 4's title, but for now, make sure to watch out for Avengers: Infinity War when it premieres in theaters later this month on April 27. Beyond that, Avengers 4 will premiere on May 3, 2019.
