One Change Tommy Wiseau Would Make To Jared Leto's Joker

We have heard some wild pitches for comic book movie casting over the years, but the idea of The Room's Tommy Wiseau portraying The Joker is one of the craziest. Alas, it is an idea that Wiseau himself has picked up on in recent days, and CinemaBlend recently had to chance to ask the eccentric filmmaker what he would bring to the role during a discussion of The Disaster Artist's upcoming home release. Drawing comparisons to the Joker seen in Suicide Squad, Wiseau explained that he would emote more than Jared Leto, saying:

I love all the actors of the world, but I think the last Joker, what they presented to us as an audience, I as a director slash actor. I noticed doesn't have enough emotion. You know? So, I would go with more emotion.

We can almost hear a bizarre version of the Joker screaming "You're tearing me apart, Harley!" It looks like Tommy Wiseau saw Jared Leto's performance as Mr. J in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, and he has some constructive criticisms. Specifically, he would've wanted to see more emotion from Leto's Joker, and that's the direction that Wiseau would take with the character if given the opportunity.

Of course, it's still worth pointing out that Tommy Wiseau didn't explicitly say that he disliked Jared Leto's performance in Suicide Squad. He merely stated that he would've added more passion, which shouldn't surprise anyone who has heard Wiseau deliver one of The Room's most legendary lines.

This whole thing started when casting rumors for Todd Philips' Joker origin movie started circulating several weeks ago. Joaquin Phoenix's name surfaced as the frontrunner to portray The Clown Prince of Crime in the non-DCEU project, but Wiseau threw his hat into the ring as an alternative casting choice. Realistically, the odds of Wiseau actually getting the chance to play The Joker seem pretty slim (especially when we consider the caliber of the actors who have been suggested as realistic contenders for the role), but it is definitely interesting to think of the man behind The Room donning the white makeup.

Only time will tell if Tommy Wiseau will ever get a chance to play a comic book character, but for now, you can check out James Franco's portrayal of Wiseau in The Disaster Artist, which is now available on Digital HD and will hit shelves on Blu-ray and DVD on March 13. Is The Curse Of La Llorona A Good Or Bad Step For The Conjuring Universe?

While it hasn’t been advertised as such, Michael Chaves’ The Curse Of La Llorona is most definitely a part of The Conjuring Universe. Its posters may only say “From The Producers Of…” instead of referring to it as the next chapter in the franchise (as was the case for both Annabelle: Creation and The Nun), but its actual connection is very clear – specifically through the return of Tony Amendola's Father Perez from the original Annabelle. Given the popularity of the brand, this might strike some as odd, but there arguably is a good reason for it: it’s the first non-Conjuring title that’s neither a direct spin-off nor a sequel to a direct spin-off.

Simply put, the film doesn’t fit in with the same development strategy that has established The Conjuring Universe to date. The reason why John Leonetti’s Annabelle and its follow-ups exist is because of the immense popularity the titular doll earned from her small part in James Wan’s original The Conjuring; and Corin Hardy’s The Nun got the greenlight because of the response to the habit-sporting demon from Wan’s The Conjuring 2. The Curse Of La Llorona, meanwhile, has roots in urban legend, but no actual connection to the other movies beyond Father Perez’s small role. It’s a surprising move for sure – but it’s also hard to say if it’s a good or bad one for the future of the franchise.

Certainly the biggest positive featured in this development is the increased potential for more diverse storytelling. As successful as The Conjuring Universe movies have been, the limitations present in its choices thus far are pretty obvious, as the “spin-off only” idea does put filmmakers in a box of a certain design. Every new property has to not only follow certain rules previously established by different writers and directors, but there is also a certain expectation for a degree of narrative dovetailing that basically forces every story to end in a specific place that matches up with a previous title.

To his credit, Gary Dauberman – who wrote the scripts for Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, and the upcoming Annabelle Comes Home (which he’s also directing) – has made this work for the most part, but the creative freedom offered by the Curse Of La Llorona approach is clear. While it’s cool that Father Perez makes his second big screen appearance, it’s really more of an Easter egg than anything, and everything else about the movie is able to really do whatever it wants – including establishing the “rules” for its eponymous evil spirit and how it concludes the arcs for its characters.

Following the release of The Curse Of La Llorona, really any horror film that shares The Conjuring Universe’s perspectives on “good” and “evil” and approach to the supernatural could arguably be included in the larger continuity – and that could lead the franchise in a lot of new and interesting directions.

Where this becomes a drawback and potential hazard for the brand, however, is the subject of identity and specific definition. Since 2013, the core of The Conjuring Universe has been Ed and Loraine Warren – the protagonists played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga based on the real life demonologist duo. Albeit very loosely, the films in the franchise have to this point been based on the legends surrounding their exploits, and have always tied back to them in one way or another.

With The Curse Of La Llorona now being an exception, it raises an important question: what is The Conjuring Universe really about? If stories aren’t specifically expanding on the myths and terrors that the Warrens personally experience, does that mean that the franchise will eventually develop into being simply a collection of titles that share a genre and maybe the occasional single character? That’s far less interesting, and could eventually dilute the whole enterprise into nothingness.

How things move forward from this point will definitely be interesting. As of right now there are seemingly only spin-offs and sequels in development – including the aforementioned Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring 3, The Nun 2, and The Crooked Man – but given the way The Curse Of La Llorona was promoted it’s possible any horror title currently being developed by Warner Bros. has the potential to be brought into the continuity. Ultimately it may be the audience’s response to the new release that determines everything, and you can be sure that we’ll be keeping a close eye on it.

It's hard to believe, but Avengers: Endgame is officially running in theaters, and blowing minds of the collective Marvel fandom. The Russo Brothers crafted an absolutely massive story, which was truly the cumulation of the last 21 movies ahead of it. Because of the high stakes and Marvel's long history in theaters, moviegoers have been running to theaters to see Endgame, and hopefully avoid any spoilers that might come first.

Since its release, Avengers: Endgame has been breaking box office records left and right, despite only being in theaters for less than a week. One of those records include the biggest opening night and weekend, as the masses assembled in theaters and some theaters included round the clock screenings. And it turns out the opening weekend made even more millions than we thought.

Originally, it was reported that Avengers: Endgame took home a whopping $350 million during its first weekend of showings, already recouping the cost of the massive blockbuster's budget. But turns out that Endgame made a few more millions, ultimately capping out at over $357 million in a matter of days.

This new numbers from Box Office Mojo further shows just how much moneymaking power Avengers: Endgame has. Every single installment in Phase Three has been a critical and box office success, and anticipation over Infinity War drove cinephiles to theaters. And when Josh Brolin's Thanos managed to snap half of all life out of existence, fans could barely stand the year-long wait before Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame's box office run should be a long one, as it's a dense movie that seems to invite multiple showings. The Russo Brothers included everything and the kitchen sink, including surprising cameos, references to past Marvel films, and a ton of breathtaking action. With so much in play, it's easy for you to miss moments on the first screening. So fans will be going to multiple screenings, and shelling out even more money over the next few weeks.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is great at serialized storytelling, but the massive franchise is even better at making money at the box office. And given the finale of Endgame, it should be interesting to see what the future has in store. There are certainly fans who will be eager for any/all new content, especially given Endgame's wild ending.

As for Marvel Studios' plans for the future, much of that currently remains a mystery. Spider-Man: Far From Home will arrive in theaters next, but the schedule for Phase Four hasn't been released. As such, it's unclear when the next movies will arrive in theaters, and give the House of Mouse the opportunity to make even more money at the box office.

No, Gwyneth Paltrow Isn't Going To Quit Acting

We’ve got the goop, er scoop, on Gwyneth Paltrow. The actress known most recently for her work in the beautysphere has been pulling double duty between that gig and acting jobs in recent years. There was apparently some expectation that after Avengers: Endgame Paltrow might be calling it quits. However, now the actress has spoken out about some previous Internet chatter saying Goop had taken over her work time. Per Paltrow:

I’ve never said that I am quitting acting. What I say is Goop is my full-time passion, and being the founder and CEO of Goop is what I do all day every day, and occasionally when something is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I'm able to participate. I think I'm just not focused on full-time acting right now.

While Gwyneth Paltrow told Today’s Savannah Guthrie that Goop kind of is her life these days, she doesn’t want to officially retire from acting or anything. In fact, she filmed a web series The Politician for 2019 and, although Endgame was filmed some time ago, she also has that coming up. It’s definitely true that Paltrow spoke out about retiring from the MCU after Endgame, at the time saying she was “a bit old to be in a suit.” She later recanted and said she would come back for Robert Downey Jr. if she were needed.

Still, it’s definitely true that Gwyneth Paltrow has slowed down in the acting business in recent years.

However, leaving the MCU and slowing down aren’t the same as passing on every single project that comes her way. Gwyneth Paltrow’s focus may be on Goop, which is expanding into Netflix content and more, but she also said she’s still very much in the acting game when the right project comes along.

During her time on Today, Paltrow also reflected on what Goop has become, revealing it was always her dream to get into business and eventually build a lifestyle brand that she could be proud of, but getting there was the challenge.

I think I had a secret dream that it would become what it’s become, but when it started 10 years ago, I had absolutely no idea. I just had a vision but I had no idea how to get there.

Goop was launched by Gwyneth Paltrow in 2008, at a time when she was still taking a lot of acting gigs -- that year, in fact, Iron Man, Two Lovers and a short called Pashmy Dream were released. As Goop has picked up, her career has slowed but not halted. In 2017, Paltrow's only filming happened for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Last year, Avengers: Infinity War was her only onscreen gig. Neither of those roles were large movie roles, but the actress has appeared in at least one project every year going back to 2010. Meanwhile, her major lifestyle brand is now worth $250 million and consumes a large chunk of the actress' time.

This is a very different deal than a lot of other actors who have gotten out of the game at various points. Robert Redford recently retired and almost immediately regretted the comment. Dumbo Reviews: What CinemaBlend Thought Of The Disney Live-Action Remake

Disney's next big live-action remake of its animated classics is here in the form of Dumbo. For the most part, Disney has had great success with both critics and fans when it comes to these remakes, but here at CinemaBlend, we're not quite sure that Dumbo is going to be the next big Disney hit. Feelings are pretty mixed here between those that feel Dumbo is a fun time spent with a very cute elephant, and those that feel the film simply fails to soar.

News Director Jessica Rawden wrote the official CinemaBlend review and while she gave it only a slight recommendation at three stars out of five, she found the film to have more going for it than against it, saying...

Although not flawless, Dumbo is genuinely enjoyable, deliciously dark and yet appropriate for kids of most ages.

The original Disney animated classic ends at the point when the world discovers that Dumbo can fly. In the new live-action version, that's only the beginning. The revelation that a circus has a flying elephant, obviously, makes the big eared pachyderm a major attraction, but it also draws the attention of others, like theme park impresario V.A. Vandevere, played by Michael Keaton. Colin Ferrell stars as the World War I vet who returns to the circus he left to find himself, and his children, put in a position to care for the baby elephant.

The one thing potentially more surprising than Disney choosing Dumbo for the remake treatment at all may have been the decision to hire Tim Burton to direct the film. Burton is known for his bringing a very dark tone to his films, and while some Disney movies have their dark moments, Dumbo isn't the first one you might think of, (although the Pink Elephants sequence is the stuff of little kids' nightmares).

Staff writer Mike Reyes felt that Dumbo was a return to form for Burton, showing us a side we haven't seen in a long time.

Tim Burton's remake of Dumbo is absolutely beautiful. While it takes a little while to get off the ground, this family drama shows the power of community, and the magic of personal belief, in a way that Burton himself hasn't shown the world in some time. This film doesn't feel like a modern cash-in, but a reimagining that takes the heart of the original and honors it with the depth it deserves.

On the whole, CinemaBlend project manager Cody Beck felt that Burton's take on the material worked, largely thanks to another solid score from longtime Burton collaborator Danny Elfman and some of the best CGI we've seen to date.

I was curious going in how the remake would handle the story and not surprisingly, Dumbo is pretty dark for a PG Movie- but that should be expected from Tim Burton. The CGI is top notch. Michael Keaton is unhinged and entertaining. A few lines and characters were a little flat with the delivery, but overall, it was a heartfelt good time. And, of course, Danny Elfman crushes it, as usual.

While some at CinemaBlend felt that the good outweighed the rougher parts of Dumbo, not everybody here agrees. Events Editor Eric Eisenberg felt that, while there were certainly some positive elements, the film as a whole just ended up average as a result. The live-action versions of animated Disney classics have run the gamut in terms of quality thus far, and Tim Burton's Dumbo basically lands square in the middle of that scale. It has its moments of wonder, as well as some remarkable cuteness, but it also isn't tremendously substantial. One certainly has to appreciate it's level of chutzpah to, as it's surprisingly bold in the way it takes direct aim at the studio that created it.

From there, however, we get to the voices who felt the Dumbo crashed and burned more than he flew. CB's Braden Roberts felt that for a movie that was designed to be a spectacle, there just wasn't anything there to wow the audience...

Dumbo left me a bit dissapointed. The movie, at its core, is a spectacle. However, it’s a shallow and lack-luster display that fails to capitalize on director Tim Burton’s signature weirdness. A few one liners had me chuckling but ultimately Dumbo left me uninspired for future live-action Disney remakes.

Disappointment is apparently the word of the day, as CinemaBlend Managing Director Sean O'Connell used the exact same word to open his comments about Dumbo. In the end, a remake needs to do something to justify the decision to remake it, and in his eyes Dumbo failed to do that.

Dumbo disappoints. Like a few of the live-action remakes that have preceded it, Dumbo failed to convince me, over the course of its run time, that it needed to exist. It trades on the mild nostalgia that the audience has for its main character, but never figures out its own reason for being. Tim Burton also was the wrong choice, as his macabre instincts make for a too-dark "family" story that's hampered by overly-broad performances and under-developed characters. A misfire from the House of Mouse.

As for me, I land somewhere on the "slightly positive" side of the big top. I appreciated the fact that Dumbo was actually more sequel than remake, something future films in this vein might consider, and I think the movie should be absolutely commended for making one particular decision that just blew me away for most of the film (no spoilers). I do also think that while the film does have dark elements, for a certain generation of kids, this movie could be one of those films they watch on an endless loop. For the older set, however, it's not going to become a new Disney classic. In the end, it reminded me of another Disney remake that I appreciated, but didn't love...

Dumbo suffers from what I will call the "Maleficent Effect." Somebody had a bold, bordering on insane, idea for a movie that feels ultimately hamstrung by the need to waste screen time retelling the plot of the original Disney movie.

Few at CinemaBlend are likely to tell their friends to rush out and see Dumbo, though some would certainly recommend seeing it, one way or another. It has elements worth appreciating, but it's not likely to be a memorable Disney remake, even if you're only comparing it to the films coming out this year.

Dwayne Johnson is involved in so many films that it's impossible for him not to have a backlog waiting in the wings. However, one that has been talked about for a long time, with little movement, has been a Doc Savage movie. The project is set to be written by Shane Black and star The Rock in the title role as the pulp-era adventurer, but things have been very quiet on that front for a long time. Now, Dwayne Johnson reveals the reason for the delay is in regards to business issues around the rights to the character. According to Johnson...

That project had a few issues, not creative issues but more so business affairs issues --- where the project once was, who had rights to it, where we were trying to move it to. There was a lot of that, which we're still kind of working through.

Dwayne Johnson has Rampage hitting theaters this weekend, another pair of films, Skyscraper and Fighting with my Family set for later this year, and numerous other projects from Disney's Jungle Cruise to a Fast and Furious spinoff to DC's Black Adam down the line. It wasn't clear where Doc Savage was going to fit in all that but based on what Johnson tells Collider, it likely won't be fitting in anywhere, as the project isn't ready to move forward until these rights issues are sorted out. These are the sorts of issues that can often take quite some time to clear up, so there's no telling when Doc Savage could be ready to go.

While The Rock's initial comment makes it sound like the Doc Savage issues are being actively worked through, the next thing he says is a bit more ominous, making it sound like it's possible these rights issues could hold the movie up indefinitely.

At the end of the day, Shane's such a spectacular writer or director, but whether it's that project or something else, we've made a pact that we're going to work together at some point in our careers.

If Dwayne Johnson is using the word or it could mean that he and Shane Black could conceivably work on some other movie together instead of Doc Savage, likely because the pair could decide the business issues are not going to reach the conclusion they want, and they leave the project behind. That would be really unfortunate as there may not be a better actor alive today to play the role than Johnson. Doc Savage is the perfect hero who has been physically and mentally trained since birth to be the best at everything, and if that isn't how Dwayne Johnson came to be, I'm not sure how he really exists.

We Saw Early Terminator Footage, And Yes, Linda Hamilton Is Badass

There’s been a lot of talk about the new Terminator sequel and what it will be about. We know Tim Miller is helming the project, there are new cast members and original cast members Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger will be involved. We've also seen some images from the new movie, but there’s a hell of a lot we don’t know about Terminator: Dark Fate and at CinemaCon 2019 the lips of cast members like Linda Hamilton, Schwarzenegger and Mackenzie Davis were clamped tightly about plot points. Luckily, the Paramount footage people were not.

We got to see some original footage from Terminator: Dark Fate and while it focused a lot on the new characters, it also tied into nostalgia in a big way.

But first, here’s what happened.

The footage starts on a bridge with an electric bubble that rips up the road and causes car crashes. Out of it drops Mackenzie Davis’ Grace, who falls from the bridge, utterly naked, and ends up landing several floors off the bridge and down onto the ground hard. A couple making out sees the fall and rushes over, only for the police to show up and assume the naked Mackenzie Davis is in trouble.

Quickly, we see the scene portrayed from her own visual viewpoint, seeing some of what her terminator-like abilities are. She sizes up the police and takes them out, prompting the young couple to thank her for saving them. She says, “Don’t thank me yet,” before stealing the young man’s clothes and the couples’ car--seemingly a nod to Terminator.

Later, there’s a scene we’ve touched on previously, in which and actress Natalia Reyes’s character Dani Ramos are running from Gabriel Luna’s new Terminator character, who is hellbent on attacking them. Just when things look dire and Mackenzie Davis tells the other young woman to run when they “start to kill her,” Linda Hamilton shows up on the scene in a vehicle, whips out a gun and shoots before she asks any questions.

Even if you’ve never seen a Terminator movie before this scene would likely be enough to hook you.

Obviously, we’ve already seen early images of Linda Hamilton back as Sarah Conner, not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return; however, seeing her in action was something different altogether. It moved director Tim Miller enough that he had some tears in his eyes on the stage and he shared with the audience that being brought in for Terminator: Dark Fate was a ‘labor of love.’

To say that working on this film was a labor of love for me is an enormous fucking understatement. I mean I think all of you can imagine just what a responsibility it is… If I could go back in time, you know time travel’s a big thing in this movie, I’d tell that incredibly handsome young nerd that one day he’d be continuing the story of these iconic characters in a new movie I would have passed out in my fucking popcorn. Even more incredibly, I get the chance to do it the right way.

So where does this nostalgia come in? Notably, at the very end of the lengthy preview, in which a cool as a cucumber Sarah Conner nonchalantly notes “I’ll be back.”

Paramount’s presentation today is big on tying back to James Cameron’s original Terminator movies. Tim Miller noted that when he spoke, but so did Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. The former attributed his success and his catchphrases to Terminator while the latter said it would only have taken a special project to pull her back into the Terminator fold 30 years later.

Well it has been nearly 30 years since I last stepped into the shoes of Sarah Conner, a character who definitely changed my life. And only a script, a story, a cast, a director like this could bring me back into this world.
