Why Kristen Stewart Was Perfect For Bella, According To Twilight's Director

It hardly seems possible that 10 years have passed since Catherine Hardwicke brought lusty, romanticized vampires to life in the mossy Pacific Northwest in the genre-defining Twilight. From the moment Twilight established Bella and Edward as star-crossed lovers for a new generation seeking their own Romeo and Juliet, these characters have remained fixtures in the global lexicon, as much a part of the pop-culture landscape as the Transformers, Star Wars or Scooby-Doo. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Hardwicke's series-launching installment, the director hopped on the phone with CinemaBlend to discuss her pivotal casting, opening up to us about the moment she knew Kristen Stewart was destined to be her on-screen Bella. Hardwicke recalls:

I had seen the amazing performance that Kristen did in an early cut of Into the Wild. And I saw her sitting down in that bed in the trailer, looking at Emile Hirsch with such longing in her eyes. I was just like, 'Okay, she is AWESOME! She is amazing. She can really show, without going too far, in a realistic way that she wants to be with this person and not overdo it and just feel so grounded, so powerful... her emotions.' So I immediately said that I wanted to get on a plane. She was shooting a movie called Adventureland. So, 'I need to go to Pittsburgh! I need to go meet her, and be sure that I feel that we can work together in person' and all of that. Which they let me do.

That was one half of the iconic duo found at the heart of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling novels. Though names like Jennifer Lawrence and Lily Collins auditioned for the part of Bella, Kristen Stewart won Catherine Hardwicke over. But who would be her Edward? The director, looking back on the movie 10 years after the fact, remembered the process of discovering Robert Pattinson, saying:

The big challenge was 'okay, what's going to be the chemistry?' Because every guy that I met looked like they could believably still be in high school. They looked almost like, kind of like they should be in high school. They were cute... but they didn't look like underworld, you know, like -- I could believe that this was somebody literally that had been around, and had a very intense intellectual life for a hundred years. I just didn't feel that from these other guys. But from Rob, when he flew out and we did the chemistry reads with Kristen, you could feel it with him. Because he is a beautiful soul, is a wonderful musician. He sounds like an old jazz, blues singer, you know? He's amazing. And [he has a] very wide range of interests, as we can see from what he's been getting into. He's a very unique person.

Twilight will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a very special return to the big screen. Fathom Events and Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment are inviting fans to return to Forks, Washington, when Twilight comes back to movie theaters nationwide this October. Catherine Hardwicke has recorded an introduction, with an exclusive sneak peek of the special feature "Twilight Tour...10 Years Later," from the upcoming Twilight 4K Ultra HD home entertainment release, available October 23.

Twilight will play in more than 450 movie theaters nationwide Sunday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 23, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. (local time). Tickets for the 10th-anniversary screenings can be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices.

The Fun Moment Mark Hamill Introduced Himself To Gal Gadot At The Oscars

While, watching The Oscars it would be easy to feel as if everyone knows one another. Actors and actresses who have never shared the screen together are often sitting next to each other, and the night is full of friendly smiles and kisses on the cheek being exchanged. Still, many of these people have never formally met and even celebrities can be fans. Such was seemingly the case at this year's Academy Awards when Star Wars actor Mark Hamill introduced himself to Wonder Woman star, Gal Gadot. Take a look below to see that even a Master Jedi can be in awe of an Amazonian princess.

What a sweet and charming moment. This happened during the segment where the celebrities took candy and food to the audience at a nearby theater to thank them for supporting the movies with their patronage. In this silly moment, while on camera, Mark Hamill decided to introduce himself to the Israeli actress. The Twitter post from @SurvivingGrady notes that this is the highlight of the Oscars and while I'd say that is debatable, this is certainly near the top of the best moments from the night. Mark Hamill looked so in awe of the beautiful and much taller Gal Gadot, not unlike when Steve Trevor met the Amazonian for the first time. I also like this moment because Mark Hamill, who has never taken his celebrity too seriously, has no problem introducing himself to the burgeoning star just like the average person would, even though he's the more tenured actor. It's just kind of neat to see such recognizable faces meeting each other for the first time.

This moment is especially cool because like many of the people who drove Wonder Woman to such success, Mark Hamill is a known comic book fan. Not only that, but the actor has been a major part of the history of DC thanks to his role as the longtime voice actor for the Joker in TV shows and video games. So as a comic fan and a proud member of the DC family, he was probably stoked to meet the woman who brought Wonder Woman to life on the big screen. Plus if you look at it from Mark Hamill's character's perspective, you're Luke Skywalker, you've been living alone for years with only porgs, caretakers and a space cow for company, if Diana Prince comes along, you've got to introduce yourself.

While the future for Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars universe remains murky, Mark Hamill may actually be making the jump to live-action comic book films, albeit not for DC. The actor and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn both seem keen on bringing Hamill into the MCU which, and I think I speak for most everyone here, would be awesome. Meanwhile, Gal Gadot's Diana Prince may be facing off with Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2, which is scheduled for release on November 1, 2019. Hannibal Buress Admits Doing A Movie About Playing Tag Is Pretty Ridiculous

Some of the best comedy comes from the most absurd places, which seems to be recognized by the folks behind Tag. In fact, the idea of a comedy focusing on a group of grown men comes with an inherent sense of weirdness not lost on cast member Hannibal Buress. On that note, Buress recently opened up in an interview and addressed the bizarre nature of the film's plot, noting that the cast would remark about the ridiculous nature of the plot while filming. The deadpan stand-up comic and Neighbors star explained:

It is pretty ridiculous. A lot of us, while we were doing it, would stop and say, 'Yo, we're doing a movie about tag.' But it's really more about the friendship and the fun and the conversations and camaraderie that come with it. The cast is really good. It's solid.

So, this indicates that the cast of Tag fully understands how bizarre the film's premise is at its core. Hannibal Buress and the rest of the actors get pretty intense with each other in the film's trailers (Jeremy Renner even broke his arms while filming the movie), but they also knew how weird the idea was when they were filming those thrilling tag sequences.

Of course, there is still plenty worth getting excited about with a film like Tag. As Hannibal Buress also noted in his remarks to Las Vegas Magazine, the film ultimately isn't actually about the game of tag as much as it's about the way the game brings this group of friends together. Moreover, the film has also enlisted a cast of heavy-hitters like Mad Men's Jon Hamm, The Office's Ed Helms, The Avengers' Jeremy Renner and New Girl's Jake Johnson, in addition to Buress. When you put all of that together, you have the ingredients for a film that could squeeze every last drop of potential out of the inherently bizarre premise.

Tag centers on a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for three decades. However, when the one member of the group who has never been tagged (Jeremy Renner) announces that he is going to retire from the game at the end of the "season," the friends converge on his wedding weekend to stage one last attempt to put their hands on him and break his perfect record.

That definitely sounds like a fairly ridiculous premise for a movie, but it also is worth noting that it's actually based on a true story of a group of friends who actually did play tag for thirty years. Maybe real life merely is more ridiculous than we give it credit for being.
