Almost since the moment he was cast as Bucky, fans have expected Sebastian Stan to take over the role of Captain America from Chris Evans. Well, I can tell you that Stan is replacing Evans...in an entirely different non-Marvel film. Yep, of all the actors in the world, Stan was selected to replace Evans in a movie called The Devil All The Time.
Chris Evans was previously cast in The Devil All The Time to star alongside fellow MCU actor Tom Holland. Directed by Antonio Campos, the film is based on Donald Ray Pollocks 2011 mid-western gothic novel. Set in the forgotten town of Knockemstiff, Ohio, Willard Russell turns to prayer to save his dying wife, which eventually leads to sacrifice. This leads his son and our protagonist, Arvin, on a path from bullied kid to a man who knows when to take action as he interacts with a nefarious cast of characters in a story that spans two decades.
However, Chris Evans' dance card has gotten mighty full these days. The actor is involved in quite a few different projects. Just this week, he committed to star in Antoine Fuqua's sci-fi film Infinite. He's also about to start production on Defending Jacob, an Apple TV series that hes starring in and producing. Evans will also appear in Rian Johnson's star-packed Knives Out.
With all these carrots in one stew, Chris Evans had a scheduling conflict with The Devil All The Time, and had to pull out of the movie, according to Deadline. However, production has found a replacement in the form of Sebastian Stan, another MCU veteran.
Of course, the funny part about this news is that Sebastian Stan is replacing Chris Evans in a non-Marvel project when almost everyone expects him to take over as Captain America one day.
Chris Evans has been playing Captain America for the better part of a decade, and all signs point to the actor moving on from his most-famous role to pursue other opportunities. It's long been speculated that Chris Evans will retire from the MCU following Avengers: Endgame, and Evans has obviously lined up quite a few projects to keep him busy.
Does that mean that Bucky will pick up the shield as his replacement? Maybe. Anthony Mackie's Falcon also stands a chance, or Marvel could just opt not to have a new Captain America altogether. It's tough to say at this point, but answer aren't that far off.
The Devil All The Time is also set to co-star Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgard, Mia Wasikowska, and Eliza Scanlen. That's quite a cast. According to Collider, the drama/horror/thriller is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2020.
In the meantime, you can see Chris Evans (and maybe Sebastian Stan) in Avengers: Endgame, which is out in theaters on April 26. It's one of the most anticipated movies of the year, so be sure to bone up your knowledge with our What We Know So Far guide.
